Rising Above The Rest

After 12 months of excruciating slowdown, companies are hiring again (that includes TURNER —  check out our current openings). That’s both good and bad news. The good news is there are real opportunities out there. The bad news? The job market is more competitive than ever. In his new When The Rules Don’t Apply column,  TURNER’s Campbell Levy offers tips for how job hunters can break out from the pack.

Food Media Evolution

Mother Jones takes a look at Whetstone, the country’s only Black-owned food glossy magazine. Founded by Stephen Satterfield, the publication has had trouble finding investors over the years. “When Satterfield recounts his struggle getting Whetstone off the ground, he sounds like an indie filmmaker with a singular vision pitching clueless Hollywood execs before going full DIY,” writes Tom Philpott. “Whetstone Media, launched in 2017, remains a shoestring operation, but it’s going strong, true to Satterfield’s vision.”

Drew In Print

Actress Drew Barrymore is moving into the magazine world. She and Bauer Media Group just announced Drew, a quarterly publication focusing on beauty, travel, and food. The first issue will hit Walmart stores this June, priced at $9.99, and will be available at more newsstands across the US a week later. “I’ve always loved magazines because of the paper and the experience,” Barrymore said. “Magazines are such a huge part of my life and they’re such a huge part of my inspiration for everything I do.”

Family Travel Post-Covid

Everyone is excited to get the Covid-19 vaccine — and then resume their usual travel habits. But what about families with kids?  The New York Times examines this complicated issue. “[A] full pediatric Covid-19 vaccine currently isn’t expected until the end of 2021 at the earliest,” writes Debra Kamin. “And while they wait, parents are struggling to figure out how they, too, can travel safely this summer, and even where their children are welcome as rules on quarantine and testing continue to shift.”
