TURNER Recommends: Fair Chase

TURNER Recommends: Fair Chase
“We’re born with a body. And how we use it matters.” We’re all about outdoor adventure at TURNER – but the subjects of Charles Bethea’s new documentary, Fair Chase, are way more about it. The film follows a group of endurance runners in their quest to re-create what is probably the original outdoor adventure: chasing down animals for food on foot. [embed]https://vimeo.com/132097735[/embed] Thousands of years of technological advancements have made this type of hunting obsolete, but as the film shows, human beings are basically designed to do it – like Bruce Springsteen sang, we were born to run. The runners in Fair Chase are some of the best in the world. But in the film, they're up against some serious competition. Pronghorn antelope are the fastest land animals in the western hemisphere, able to run up to 55mph. And as one commentator notes, they're “as fast as a cheetah, with the endurance of a dog.” Beautifully filmed on the vast expanses of plains outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Fair Chase is a fascinating look at the unique mindset of the endurance runner, a crash course in human evolution, and a pretty thrilling adventure story all wrapped into one. You can watch it on demand now.
