Mood-Enhancing Travel

Bad weather = Bad mood. It makes sense – but now there’s science to back it up. Stanford University recently investigated how weather conditions are connected to the emotions that people express on social media. Travel + Leisure’s suggestion? A vacation to warmer climes, of course. “In the United States, Los Angeles leads the pack with the most nice days (183) per year, according to government weather data,” Cailey Rizzo writes. “In fact, all of California is great for those looking for the most pleasant weather year-round. Runners up were San Diego and San Francisco.” With fall here and winter around the corner, the Golden State is looking even more golden than usual.

A Suitcase Full of Mental Health

Maybe a vacation is just what you need to improve your mental health. But you can put the odds more in your favor if you pack a few key wellness items. Over at mindbodygreen, associate health editor Gretchen Lidicker has gathered eight things she never leaves home without. We especially like the idea of bringing Trader Joe’s mess-free coconut oil packets and the 8-greens tubes, which can keep you up with your intake on those all-important greens (in between sampling decadent local cuisine, of course).

Traveling, Naturally

PopSugar’s Ariana Dickson has even more tips on how to keep wellness top of mind while you’re on the move, and how to avoid those all-too-familiar travel pitfalls: off-balance digestion, jet lag, dry skin, etc. Particularly useful is the suggestion to take Echinacea before and after your trip: “It can help to reduce upper respiratory symptoms that appear as a result of flying, mid-travel headaches, and jet lag duration,” Dickson writes. “It's a major immune booster filled with antioxidants.” Also, you can avoid dehydration by doing more than just drinking a lot of water; all-natural facial oils and thermal water sprays can make a huge difference.

Wellness Abroad

So you want to incorporate wellness into your adventures abroad? Make sure you’re doing it right, says Self’s Annie Daly. During a trip in Croatia, she says, “I began to connect the dots in a big way and see, truly see, that wellness didn't need to be such a thing.” Basically, you need to get out of your personal “wellness bubble.” Instead of imposing your own expectations and practices over the country you’re visiting, you should try to discover how wellness is approached in the local culture. It’ll give you a reality check, Daly says: “Ultimately, my travels reminded me that we don’t have to kill ourselves going to all these crazy classes and drinking all these crazy elixirs in an attempt to live our best lives.”
